Our January Disney Trip: Record Cold, Low Crowds & Long Waits?!

We just got back from our January Disney trip — and let me tell you… we did not expect record low temperatures in Florida.

It was COLD cold. Like multiple layers, hand warmers, and hot coffee all day kind of cold.

But honestly? January still has its perks.

The Weather: Not Your Typical Disney Sunshine

We packed for “mild Florida winter” and instead got record low temps. Mornings were freezing, and evenings were even colder. If you’re planning a January trip, don’t underestimate it — bring:

  • Real coats (not just cute ones)
  • Gloves for the kids
  • Warm socks
  • Layers you can peel off midday

By afternoon, it was manageable in the sun, but rope drop and nighttime fireworks were next-level chilly.

The Crowds: Low… But Not Really?

Here’s the interesting part.

It felt less crowded walking around. The walkways weren’t shoulder-to-shoulder, and quick service spots weren’t chaotic.

But the ride wait times? Still hit 90–120 minutes for popular rides.

Even during “low crowd season,” the most in-demand attractions consistently hovered around 2 hours.

That surprised me.

Was Multi-Pass Worth It? 1000% Yes.

I absolutely recommend getting the Multi-Pass and purchasing Single Individual Lane passes — even in January.

Low crowd season does NOT mean low wait times for the top-tier rides.

Using the passes allowed us to:

  • Stack rides early
  • Avoid standing in the freezing wind for 2 hours
  • Keep the kids happy (and warm)
  • Actually enjoy the park instead of stressing about lines

It made the entire trip smoother and way less exhausting.

Would I Do January Again?

Probably not — I prefer April or November. January does have its perks.

The lower overall crowds were nice. Walking through the parks felt calmer. But the cold weather caught us off guard, and wait times still required strategy.

If you’re planning a winter Disney trip:

  • Don’t assume short waits
  • Budget for ride passes
  • Dress warmer than you think you need

Overall, it was magical, but it definitely reminded me that even “off season” requires a plan.

And honestly? There’s something kind of special about sipping hot coffee on Main Street in a winter coat.

Would I trade sunshine for lower crowds again? Maybe but I prefer April or November.
Would I skip Multi-Pass next time? Absolutely not.
